The Refuge is perfectly suited for those who want to relax and enjoy the calm natural beauty, and it will completely fulfill the cravings of the leading adventurer.

There is an endless range of activities starting in your backyard and continuing on through millions of acres of national forests that buffer your home. There is the culture and class of nearby towns, particularly the wildly famous Jackson Hole less than 45 minutes away by way of the easily accessible and amazingly beautiful Snake River Pass. From snowmobiling to horseback riding, golfing to fly fishing, skiing to biking, it will only take a moment to realize why Wyoming is called the recreational playground of the world.


Located in city with 500 inches of snow annually means there are tons of activities to enjoy during the winter, and one of the most beloved is snowmobiling.

There are over 335 miles of mapped trails ranging from mild to wild, with panoramic views of 11,000-ft. snow-capped peaks.

No need to trailer your snow machines or ATV’s to access these world-class trails – they will be waiting right outside your window.

Alpine is consistently voted a top-10 destination for snowmobiling and has been featured numerous times in the “Top Trails” of SnoWest magazine’s “The Western Guide to Snowmobiling.

Ski & Snowboard

If you don’t feel like back-country skiing/snowboarding and using your snowmobile as your makeshift ski lift there are two great mountains close by.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, featuring 16 lifts of exciting terrain. With over 4,100 vertical feet of skiing, it ranks as the greatest continuous rise in the U.S. and is situated in the lively city of Jackson Hole. Just 30 minutes drive by way of the incredible and always open Snake River Pass.

Another accessible destination is Grand Targhee Resort, located in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest in Alta, Wyoming is a beautiful, uncrowded mountain continually recognized for the great snow, genuine western hospitality, scenic beauty, excellent value and commitment to sustainability.

The resort has lodging, a spa, retail stores, conference facilities and plenty of other activities including Nordic skiing trails, snowshoeing, snowcat adventures, tubing, sleigh ride dinners and dogsled tours.

A cross country skiing trail can also be found along Greys River in Alpine and another on the west side of the airport that starts at US 26 and national forest Road 020.


The Refuge at Alpine sits around three rivers, a reservoir, and numerous creeks making it a pure fishing delight. Or venture 30 minutes from your home and find yourself at the South Fork of the Snake River.

The salmon fly “Hatch” here is a trout lover’s paradise and while you must release the rare Yellowstone or fine-spotted cutthroats, there are plenty of non-native rainbows and brows to enjoy.

The Lodge at Palisades Creek provides premiere guides, boats, lodging, and meals if you want to make a trip out of it or stay local and fish with an expert guide from Rockin’ M Ranch.

Hiking & Camping

The parallel Salt River Range and Wyoming Mountains provide a multitude of hiking trails throughout the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Breathtaking views from snow-capped peaks, flower-filled meadows and deep pine groves are some of the pleasures you’ll enjoy when exploring the nearby countryside.

If you don’t mind driving, there are numerous trails that can be found nearby like Idaho’s Palisades where you can pick huckleberries, Idaho’s state fruit, and search for some of the 80 pairs of bald eagles living in the area.

Boating & Kayaking


Ski Boats, pontoon Boats, fishing boats, wakeboard boats, deck boats, kayaks, sea doo’s, and paddleboards are all permitted on Palisade’s Reservoir.

With 70 miles of shoreline and 6 access roads, there is plenty of room to enjoy the water with your friends and family.


The Refuge sits close to many beautiful golf courses, including Shooting Star, Snake River, and Three Creek Ranch Golf Club. Snake River Sporting Club is located in Jackson Hole, this Tom Weiskopf masterpiece measures just over 7,500 yards from the tips, and opened as the #2 New Private Course in the US in 2007 (Golf Digest). The design of the golf course has variety that runs throughout the layout weaving through native pines, cottonwoods and willows just yards away from the Snake River. Mr. Weiskopf took great care to incorporate the natural landscape into the course architecture, and still considers the Snake River Sporting Club as his finest US design to date.

A Weiskopf designed short-game practice area compliments a practice green and range facility with tees on both the North and South ends.

Horseback Riding

Trail rides are a tremendous way to explore the mountains and cover more ground without expending too much energy.

Jackson Hole Trail Rides will take you miles up Greys River Road to their camp where rides begin. Depending on your level of experience, you can take mellow trails and end up cutthroat fishing or ride up steep, narrow trails for the more daring.

Choose your adventure and if you’d like to make a trip out of it, you can enjoy a steak dinner back at camp and spend the night in a heated platform tent with bedding, shower, and bathroom facilities supplied.


Hunting is a big attraction in Alpine and there is plenty of wildlife in the area. Preseason begins as early as November and does not end until September.

Mule Deer, Elk, Antelope, Moose, Sheep, Black Bear, and Mountain Lions are major trophies, and whether you’re a veteran or a beginner Non-Typical Outfitters is there to help with all your hunting needs.
